The holidays can be a time of great joy, seeing family, holiday shopping and eating festively. Planning, cooking shopping, and visiting relatives can also be a time of great stress.
It may seem like a difficult time to keep up with your daily self-care practices like Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or Reiki. But remember the story of the wise teacher whose student said, "But, Teacher, I am too busy to practice for a half-hour today," and the teacher responded, "Then practice for an hour."
It's true that the holidays can get us going in may directions and seem to drain our time for self-care away, but this is when we need self-care the most. Remember that self-care is not just for us, we do it for everyone in our lives. Our self-care practice makes the holidays more joyful and it makes us much more pleasant to be around.
With this in mind, your practice is your highest priority. Set an appointment with yourself, ideally at the same time every day. The first thing in the morning works best for me. Once my day gets rolling it's easier to put it off or even skip it altogether. Remember, your practice is not selfish, it's self-care!
